The Chester River Association in Chestertown is a local group associated with the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. The bulk of the Association consists of volunteers who periodically test the tributaries of the Chesapeake Bay. The overall effort is to improve the health of the Bay. Heron Point volunteers take samples at two river sites and conduct the appropriate tests.

We have a wide range of opportunities for exercise at Heron Point ranging from walking around the campus to swimming. There are numerous fitness programs both on campus and in town.

Safety
Safety is an important, ongoing concern. We are supported by 24/7 security and medical staff. A resident group meets quarterly with staff to consider the range of safety issues.
This gathering meets weekly for sewing and socializing.
A group of Heron Point residents makes a point of welcoming new residents shortly after they move in.
A ham radio group for the Chestertown area meets monthly at Heron Point. Some of our residents and staff are active participants.
Heron Point residents have numerous opportunities to hear live music. In addition to performances held on our campus, Chestertown and the surrounding area abound with musical events. Heron Point provides transportation to these off-campus presentations.
Additionally, a group of residents meets weekly to listen to and discuss musical selections.
Sailing is a wonderful activity whether for relaxation or racing, and both are available in our area. Some of the best opportunities begin just down-river and, of course, in the Chesapeake Bay. There are several marinas close by and chartering is available.

There is a group in Heron Point that enjoys bird carving weekly. They are led by a Chestertown resident who is both an excellent carver and a good teacher.
Washington College has an ongoing archeological project in the Chester River area. These activities are located in the old Customs House at the foot of Cannon Street.
We have an active group at Heron Point, the Saturday Morning Artists, many of whom are closely allied with the local Chestertown Art League. As a result several times a year we have displays of local artists' work in the halls of the main building. There is an Art Appreciation Group that meets biweekly.
Kent County has an active bird club that is a chapter of the Maryland Ornithological Society. It holds its monthly meetings at Heron Point, and a number of our residents are members.
An active book club for Heron Point residents meets monthly. Members choose the books they will read and volunteer to lead discussions.
Bridge is quite active at Heron Point with several groups of residents playing duplicate and otherwise. In addition, there are groups in Chestertown where some of our residents are members.
Residents have organized other games and have easily found players among their friends. Bocce has a following, and there are chess players on our campus.
Then there are those of us who play computer games such as Free Cell and Spider.
A group of residents meets quarterly with the staff in charge of buildings and grounds to discuss maintenance issues, improvement projects, and the overall condition of Heron Point.
The Chester River and many other tributaries to Chesapeake Bay are superb canoeing and kayaking spots. Sites include state parks and some wildlife preserves. Some of our members own their own boats or boats may be rented nearby.
Our chaplain meets weekly with a group of residents who wish to study a variety of topics chosen by them. For the most part, their interests have been more centered on recent times rather than on historical studies.
Many of us enjoy classes on a wide variety of subjects through the Washington College Academy of Life-Long Learning. The classes are held during the fall, winter, and spring months. In addition to being students, some of our residents teach these classes.
The Dining Services Group is composed of residents who provide feedback and recommendations concerning our meal quality and service. Meetings are held monthly in conjunction with dining staff.
Several residents and staff meet monthly to discuss with the activities director different entertainment opportunities.
Opportunities abound for fishing. We may fish from our dock on the Chester River, rent a boat, or join a fishing charter boat either for fishing on the Bay or for ocean fishing.
We are encouraged to have flowers and shrubs around our cottage or on our apartment patio or balcony. Some of us even have vegetables and herbs among them. Additionally for flowers or vegetables or both, there are garden plots on campus where we cultivate to our heart's content.
The Heron Point gift shop carries many items ranging from gift cards and stamps to articles of clothing and seasonal gifts. It is staffed by resident volunteers, and its profits support projects that benefit residents.
A group of residents interested in all aspects of health and wellness meets monthly with some staff members from the health center. Their objective is to promote knowledge about health issues through in-house communication and invited speakers.
Our area is steeped in American history which fosters both curiosity and participation. The Historical Society of Kent County is located in the Geddes Piper House in Chestertown. Some residents are members of the society.
Heron Point has a well-stocked main library managed by resident volunteers. New volumes are added frequently. There are two branch locations as well: a reference library and a library in Tolchester, the assisted living area.
We also have access to the Kent County Library and the Washington College library.
A medical condition encountered by many senior citizens is loss of vision, partial or total. A group of residents meets bi-monthly to discuss the many options for assistance and for medically addressing sight problems.
Photography is enjoyed by many at Heron Point. A group of residents meets monthly to show and discuss their latest photos and techniques. They display some of their bestwork for others to enjoy. In addition, Washington College periodically offers photography classes that are available to our residents.
Heron Point offers outings to concerts, events, and social activities. Also, from time to time, there are opportunities to participate in a visit to a more distant attraction that may involve an overnight stay.
As in any community, some people have articles for which they no longer have any use. These are collected by a group of residents who meet weekly to sort and price them. Several times each year, they conduct a white elephant sale that supports various needs at Heron Point. Most of these sales are open to the public and are well attended by townsfolk.
The Wood Shop Group usually meets annually to keep the woodworking equipment and tools in good shape and acquire additional articles. Members not only perform tasks for their own needs but also make repairs for residents and others, such as local churches.
Residents and staff of Heron Point are interested in keeping our landscape attractive, and a group meets monthly to discuss both plans and concerns.
Various kinds of puzzles are undertaken by our residents. For example, a jigsaw puzzle or two is almost always on a table in some stage of completion. Other residents enjoy taking on the sudoku puzzle in our weekly newsletter. Even our gift shop gets into the act, offering puzzles constructed by residents.
You name it, and that boating activity is almost certain to be close by (except for off-shore, and that is not too far away). Many of us own or have owned boats and are active on Chesapeake Bay. There are several marinas and two yacht clubs on the Chester River and many more on other nearby tributaries. Chartering is easily done, and the Bay is one of the greatest boating/sailing areas in the world.
