Heron Point is located in Chestertown, a town cited by AARP as a great place to retire. There are three focal points: the Chester River, the historic downtown, and Washington College.

The Chester River
Chestertown, as well as Heron Point, is built beside the Chester River. At the foot of High Street and following along River Street is the harbor of Chestertown. The ship Sultana is based here and is joined from time to time by other tall ships.  Click here for more information: Sultana. (This will open a new window.)

Numerous other boats are berthed here, and with little effort you can sense Chestertown's role as an important port both before and for a long time following the Revolutionary War.

The river has been the center of activity for Chestertown since its founding in 1703 and is lined with historic houses--some grand, others modest--and commercial buildings such as the Customs House. Heron Point is located about a half mile up-river, where our boardwalk passes over wetlands to our pier and offers an open view both up and down the river.

Historic Downtown
Chestertown's downtown historic district has been preserved in a way that few others can match. Most shops, restaurants, and other enterprises are located in authentic buildings that have been preserved for one, two, or three centuries.

Fountain Square is the home for the farmer's market, summer concerts, and various arts and crafts exhibitions.

Each spring the much repeated, greatly embellished, and somewhat dubious Chestertown Tea Party is celebrated as part of an entire weekend of family-friendly festivities.  It's a moving celebration taking place variously in the central downtown area, on the wharf, and in the waterfront park.

Washington College
Washington College is one of the oldest institutions of higher learning in the country and has been an influence on Chestertown since its founding in 1782. The college was named in honor of George Washington, who had visited Chestertown several times. He also provided the college with a small, but important, endowment. Some residents of Heron Point have served as faculty members of the college.

Perhaps the most direct benefit to our residents is the Washington College Academy of Lifelong Learning, or WC-ALL. It offers a wide variety of courses in which many of our residents enroll, and some serve as instructors. More details are available at WC-ALL.

Concerts, films, and student plays, as well as lectures by well-known personalities, are offered by the college each year and add to the many opportunities available to Heron Point residents. Additionally, some residents choose to audit selected college courses for a matriculation fee.

Convenience
Nothing is far away in Chestertown.  Both the hospital and Washington College, for example, are a half-mile or less from Heron Point and all local shopping is within two miles.

Surrounding area
Whenever we wish to be on the go, we find a wealth of things to do in the area around Chestertown. Given our proximity to both river and bay, it's not surprising that those features top the list. For more about some of the possibilities click on the following.
